My evidence my memory was failing me at age 44 years.

I was at university on my placement year and was working one full night a week in security and at the weekends also in security and working on my placement 5 days a week as an assistant network engineer. It was fun. I cycled everywhere. On my bike one day I was knocked unconscience in a car accident. I was out for ages, because when I woke the ambulance was already there and the paramedics were asking me questions, like what is your name etc. I did not know the dangers of concussion at this time. I finished my placement and went back to university to finish my last year which inlcuded a dissertation on "depositing and retrieving memories in an artificial neural network using chaos theory" very enjoyable but very stressful. After graduation I fell into a decline. Looking back on this it seems my brain was functioning on stress hormones, and taking me out of an environment that helped produce these stress hormones meant my brain fell back into a rest repair state or maybe I should call it a brain fog state?

Jobs that I had been recruited for highlighted that my brain was not working very well. I had trouble learning new things. Two employers actually said to my face, "you are not able to do this work". So I returned to doing my previous trade of carpentry and joinery which I already understood very well. And slowly built a business. This business feed me for nearly 16 years, and again I loved it. However, drinking nearly a bottle of red wine a day took its toll over those years, and I was diagnosed with the beginnings of heart disease by the GP.

The real evidence of my memory decline came slowly at first and than speeded up! I was looking into peoples" faces and hearing about events that I had been involved in that I had completely no recollection of. This just seemed strange to start with, but it was a little embarrassing too. So I gently asked these individuals to expand on the event in the hope that it would spark the memory. I did not want to reveal my ignorance to the occassion at all. Without this feedback I wonder how long it would have been before my own realisation would have set in. Like Jordon Peterson says in his book that we outsource our sanity and moral behaviour to our social group and peers. Similarly it was this feed back that catapolted me into the reality of my malfunctioning brain.

My condition continued to get worse and the event that marked the beginning of my turnaround that resulted in my resolve to try and fix this, was when the event had happened just two weeks earlier and infact was an installation of a wardrobe, whereupon, I was to return in a week and collect the rest of the money owed to me. Not only did I completely forget about this, but my assistant had bumped into the client in the market that day, and the customer asked about me. I was shocked, not only did my assistant recognise the customer amonst a throng of people in the market, but the customer recognised my assistant and I was not able to remember the whole job! This was an unmistakable memory problem.

Further to this I had other symptoms. For example: I was feeling more and more exhausted and begun a regular afternoon nap routine. These were not normal naps because when I woke I would almost feel half dead. The waking up was plagued with a lethargy and an almost unconscience state. It felt like my brain did not want to wake up. Getting my eyes to focus was also a real effort. Having learned later that Alzheimers was being considered diabetes type 3, made me see the connection between my high sugar content diet and my memory loss.

Next the doctor diagnosed me with the beginnings of heart disease. So feeling like I had three big problems all hitting me at the same time: diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimers or dementia, I started reading and practicing what I read. This put me on the road that ultimately led to my writing this article in the hope that my story helps others.
